The community of Lakeland is mourning the tragic loss of John Parks, a 54-year-old resident who died following a fatal pedestrian accident on North Florida Avenue late Friday night.
According to the Lakeland Police Department, the incident occurred on May 8, 2026, at approximately 10:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Florida Avenue. Investigators reported that Mr. Parks was attempting to cross the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk when he entered the southbound lanes.
Authorities stated that he was first struck by a black Toyota sedan driven by 22-year-old Angelique Fernandez of Lakeland. After the initial impact, Mr. Parks remained in the roadway and was subsequently struck by a white Chevrolet sedan driven by 40-year-old Jay Bloodworth, also of Lakeland. Neither driver sustained injuries.
Emergency responders from the Lakeland Police Department, Polk County Fire Rescue, and the Lakeland Fire Department arrived quickly and initiated life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Mr. Parks was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
The Lakeland Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. The roadway was closed for several hours overnight as investigators processed evidence and reconstructed the scene. Officials have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
