Rankin County Double Murder-Suicide: Family Land Dispute Leaves Three Dead on Monterey Road

Authorities in Rankin County, Mississippi, have confirmed that a deadly shooting on Monterey Road stemmed from an ongoing family land dispute, leaving three family members dead in a tragedy that has shocked the local community.

According to investigators, deputies responded just before 4 p.m. Friday to the 1400 block of Monterey Road near Florence after receiving reports of a shooting. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered Walter E. Birdsong Jr., 62, and Amanda L. Birdsong, 43, fatally shot at the scene. Authorities later identified Kurt Tyler Birdsong, 56, as the suspected shooter.

Investigators said Kurt Birdsong barricaded himself inside a residence following the shooting, prompting a large law enforcement response that included SWAT teams, negotiators, and federal agencies. After several hours of unsuccessful attempts to establish contact, officers breached the home and found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials stated that the Birdsong family had longstanding ties to a firearms-related business operating on the property, leading authorities to request assistance from agencies including the FBI and ATF due to safety concerns.

Beyond the investigation details, the tragedy has left a deep emotional impact on the Rankin County community. Friends, relatives, and neighbors are mourning the sudden loss of lives connected through family and shared history. Incidents involving family disputes are often especially painful for communities, as they leave lasting emotional wounds that extend far beyond the immediate scene.

As investigators continue piecing together the full timeline and circumstances leading up to the shooting, many in the community are focusing on remembering the lives lost rather than the violence itself.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Birdsong family and all those affected by this devastating tragedy.
