Authorities in Shreveport have identified Shamar Elkins as the man responsible for a devastating domestic violence mass shooting that left eight children dead last month, including seven believed to be his own children and one cousin.
Investigators say the April 19, 2026 attack unfolded across multiple locations in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. Police reported that the children, ranging in age from 3 to 11 years old, were killed during what authorities described as a domestic violence incident. Two women were also injured in the attack.
Reports that surfaced after the tragedy revealed troubling warning signs years before the shooting. According to relatives interviewed by media outlets, Elkins allegedly threatened violence during marital problems, reportedly telling his wife that he would kill the family if she ever left him.
Authorities stated that Elkins later died following a confrontation with law enforcement after fleeing the scene. Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shootings, including how the firearm used in the attack was obtained. Federal charges were later filed against a man accused of helping Elkins acquire the weapon despite prior legal restrictions.
The tragedy has drawn national attention and renewed conversations surrounding domestic violence intervention, mental health crises, and firearm access. Funeral services for the eight children were held in Shreveport on May 9, where hundreds of mourners gathered to honor the young victims during an emotional community memorial.
Community leaders, faith organizations, and grieving families continue calling for stronger support systems aimed at preventing domestic violence tragedies before they escalate into irreversible loss.
